Lay the handrail material on top of the stairs so that the handrail is alongside the upper and lower posts. Place the angle divider on top of the handrail. Slide it down to the lower post and extend the metal arm outward to match the vertical post.
For stairs with 4 or more risers, most codes require a handrail on at least one side. Use a vertical 2 x 4 pressure-treated board with routed edges or an exterior-grade metal rail.
